I would like to start and have the basic construction idea down for the bishop dress, but I was wondering if you could help me out with a little question I have. Do I need to make the dress "bigger" because of the smocking around the yoke? Do you use a pattern, if so which pattern do you use for your Bishop dresses?

Hello. I found your blog on a search of bishop dresses. I'm new to smocking and want to make one of these for my daughter. Is there a pattern you use for the dress? It looks like a fairly simple design with ragalan sleeves, but do you is there a ratio to account for how much the collar "shrinks" after pleating it? Thanks for your help! I use the Chery Williams bishop pattern. You do have to make the dress a little longer than they suggest by the pattern for today's longer style, but I follow the pattern otherwise. She sells patterns from doll through size 14 so there is one to fit any girl! It is designed for a thinner basiste or broadcloth fabric. I have done them in thicker fabrics, but you do have to reduce the amount of fabric used with corduroy or velvet. Let me know how it goes!
