Baby "Baskets"

I used this pattern to make these baby baskets (I just added a handle). You can even throw them in the wash so baby can play with them too! I thought they would be a cute way to organize all the little stuff you need when you have a little one around. I have two baby showers this Sunday so I made one for each baby. I think they will LOVE them.

The girls decided to design little purses while I made their latest garments. They are fully lined with white inside and have a little pocket inside too. Their "pattern" was a piece of paper from the printer then they just folded it in half to make the purses...too cute!

New Shirt - McCalls 5798

This is for my elder daughter -- she is getting too big for dresses all the time -- this is a shirt from pattern McCalls 5798 (size 10) made a little longer than the pattern calls for and a ruffle added, too. I wonder why they can't just make patterns longer these days...nobody wears a shirt that cuts off at their waist anymore! She picked everything out herself.

My daughter feels so pretty in her new dress...made from old drapes in my mother's house! Pattern is Simplicity 3902 - pretty easy pattern and has almost no gathering...form fitting and very flattering on the body. I always add some length to this pattern as my girls don't like dresses shorter than their knees.

I added a little more single crochet to make a wider band...and a few color changes...LOVE IT!

Step 1: You chain 16 and do row after row of 15 single crochets until it wraps all the way around your head.
I did two colors and changed color halfway through. Looks like the beginning of a scarf.

(I think it was about 3o rows of each color for a 7 year old about 34 of each for my big noggin), and I started both colors off the chain so I would know how many rows to do...kinda like burning the candle at both ends! It was my first one so I didn't know how many rows to do to fit my big head.)

Step 2: With a yarn needle, I sewed the beginning to the end and then sewed the top of the tube together.

Step 3: Then I did 9 rows of single crochet around to form the "band" (I did three purple, one orange, one purple, one orange, and three more purple rows.)

When you lay it flat it looks like a rectangle. Pom poms are 12 strands of 2 colors 7 inch long pieces (2 colors so 24 in all) tied in the center and sewed to the top corners.

Super Easy American Doll Skirt from Recycled Flare Jeans

2. Cut off the ankle (8 inches or so) of one leg of the jeans
3. Fold over twice & sew almost all the way around
4. Insert elastic
5. Sew the hole shut

Mom's pillow & cushion recovering project

Mom bought a new couch and had an old chair that she wanted to put with it. I had the task to recover the cushions on the chair to match the couch. She bought this pretty floral fabric, and I recovered the pillows that came with her couch, salvaging the piping and back of the pillow. Also salvaged the foam and zippers on the rocking chair cushions...more pictures will be added of this project later as I finish the project.

The picture on the left is the "before" shot of the two cushions and one of the two pillows...you can sure see that they DO NOT go together!

FYI - I am NOT going into the furniture recovering business...

Second Kanzashi Pattern

This one starts from circles and makes a flower about the size of the original circles. Pretty quick to make these and now the girls are picking the fabric and tracing the circles...Here's a link to the Tutorial I used... I think I'll put the pink buttons in the center of these...or maybe I'll make a Yo-Yo for the center...Haven't decided yet.

My first Kanzashi Flower

I used this video to make this flower. I like this and it only took about 20 minutes of my time to do! I didn't do it exactly right, and my second one should have better lines than this one, but it will make a cute hairbow.

Jeans Coozie

Saw a cute coozie today made with the waistband of a pair of jeans then they tied ribbon to look like a belt. Then I sewed in one of those free coozies that companies hand out with their logo inside to actually keep your drink cold.

Well, I tried it -- and this will be one of a kind because I don't plan to try again. Sewing through that many layers of jeans stinks so this is the result and I'm moving on. You can't be perfect every time. Hard to know the exact size of the rectangle to sew a circle on the bottom too.

Sleepover Nightgowns

Size 8, View A, This is for my daughter. Recycled white fabric that Mom will probably recognize. The neat thing on this one is the little black line around the bottom. I didn't have any black ribbon for that accent so I tried something new. I zig zagged around a piece of worsted weight black yarn and I LOVE the result. I may never do ribbon like that again. It was easy, forgiving, and has a nice fuzzy look to the accent. I was trying to make a more "grown up" looking dress. I think she may wear this with tights to school...it's too cute to save for Sundays only!

I liked this head hugging pattern. It is mostly double crochet so it finishes quick. I didn't do as many rows as the pattern calls for because the pattern's for a grown-up and this one is for a kid. I also crocheted with two strings for the last row of single crochet by adding some eyelash to make it nice for my "Fancy" girl!

My cousin had a preemie several months ago and she's finally home from the hospital! I made this little crochet cap for her this Christmas...so cute! It's in pure white, but I had to turn off the flash to see the stitches. Here's the pattern. To make this pattern a baby hat, I used a hook 3 sizes smaller and sport weight yarn. Took about 90 minutes to whip it up! After adding a little eyelash yarn to the last row -- viola!

My Aunt requested this bib/Apron made from fabric and a hand towel. The top of the "bib" has two different fabrics so it is reversable for two different looks. The bottom is a hand towel so it is more absorbant that my earlier version I made a while ago. I just cut off the bottom of the old pattern and added the towel - I see I didn't put the velcro on yet...there's more to do!

You can sew a rectangle on three sides to make a nice pocket for little feet when they cover up with this blanket.

OR ... You can turn it over, fold into thirds, then little folds up to the rectangle and when you flip it inside out, you have a pillow...

They are drawstring bags that open flat. You can store smaller jewelry items in the 6 wedged shaped pockets or larger pieces in the middle of the pouch. I made these several years ago for some ladies in my family. I finally came across some satin to make these.

Colonial day at school. Dress pattern is

Simplicity 5483. I used an old bed sheet as the fabric for the dress. The sheet had the long eyelet on it already so I didn't have to embellish that by hand. She wanted an apron, so we found some lacy fabric to be her apron as this pattern yields a very loose fitting dress. She refused to even wear a bonnet so I didn't waste my time making one.

Purse of Shame - Shot Gun Shell Pouch

This is a booby prize my husband asked me to make. His hunting club has a "spring blast" party where they all shoot skeet all afternoon and whoever does the worst used to get a fishing pole, but now they have this lovely "purse of shame." It is worn as a belt to hold their shotgun shells while shooting. I used lovely supergirl fabric to line it and a nice combination of lace and ribbon to dress it up just right. My husband was so excited about bringing it to work to hand off to the biggest loser...it is too bad that he ended up being the loser! He will have to bring it back next year and pass it on to next year's recipient!

I made a dress for my older daughter to wear Easter morning...Yes, I made it the night before Easter and it only took 3 hours from getting out the fabric to a finished product.

I Love this pattern for many reasons, it is fast, cute, comfortable, no zipper or buttons, and it has pockets in the side seam. Added about 2 inches to the length so it would reach her knees. Simplicity 3513

My older daughter needs a little more "mature" looking wardrobe so I found this little suit pattern and some corduroy that still has a bit of little girl flair! I LOVE how it turned out. The jacket is fully lined and has like 25 pieces so it really took some time to put together, but doesn't she look like a little CEO? The shirt underneath I am not too sure about, we'll see what else we have that could go underneath, but I wanted to take a picture right away. I don't remember the pattern I used for the skirt, but the jacket is Simplicity 4669 view C.

My daughter had to wear PJs to school the last day before Christmas break, so she picked these fabrics out for her "Polar Express" day at school. They do have a yellow cuff on the hem of the pants, sleeves, and the yellow pockets (her fave color). She also wore them on Christmas Eve. Nothing feels better than new PJs on Christmas Eve, right?

Fabric Strip Crocheted Bowls

My sister, probably a year ago, gave me the bowl in the middle and several balls of the fabric strips. She has trouble with her wrists, and after making the back one, she decided she didn't have the "stamina" to make two more. I made the one on the right last night and the oval one on the left this morning (sorry, no patterns). I really enjoyed this project. They are all about 12 inches across, so they are rather large, heavy duty, and thick. This was fun and my girls have both requested one for their room. I'll do them when my hands recover. It is tiring to the hands to work with the fabric strips, but WOW what a neat project. I know my sis will like them!

New Haircuts and New Dresses

I have had this fabric for several months, but was scared to cut it -- today I took the plunge and made these two dresses. It is a very soft corduroy that cost an arm and a leg. I am pleased with the way the dresses turned out -- and they look good with the new haircuts we got today too. They have a pretty brown microcheck as the lining, and an invisible zipper back closure.

Striped Christmas Skirts

These Christmas skirts are too cute! I started by measuring my daughters' waists and then added about 10-14 inches to that measurement to know the width of the skirt. I then measured from their waist to their knees to get the length. No pattern, just a straight skirt with a waistband. The black trim is that eyelash crochet thread -- I just made a chain stitch and zig zagged it onto the seam area where I joined the ruffle. I LOVE these and wish I were quirky enough to pull one off myself!

I think they will look good with any black, white, red, or green shirt they have already in the closet.

Circles Mary De smocked top - Finished

Finished this up tonight. Mary De dress in size 8 shortened to be a top. Front view on teh left, back view on the right. We already had the pants in the closet. I thought I should go with a simple geometric on the top since she is getting bigger now, and the fabric is busy enough anyway. She LOVES it and can't wait to wear it to school Tuesday...she said she can't wear it tomorrow because she has art and doesn't want to risk getting markers or paint on it. I guess she does like it!

We will have promotion Sunday at church next week where the church presents a bible to all of the new third graders. I made this array of bible covers with little ribbon bookmarks for the kids. (Thanks for the pattern Tracy!) Won't they be cool?

Dressy Barette Holders

Mom & I teamed up and made these pretty barette holders for the girls. You clip their barettes to the ribbons that are hanging down. The flowers on the belts weren't fastened at the point when this picture was taken, but they are now hanging on the wall full of their hairbows!

Hibiscus Floral Print Dress with Belt

I fell in love with this hibiscus fabric and for some reason if I love a piece of fabric, I have a hard time making something with it unless it is just the right thing...I think I did this fabric justice. My daughter loves this twirling dress. The dress is Butterick 4718 with sleeves from Simplicity 4658. One other alteration is that I lined the bodice...I am so "over" facing pieces. The dresss fits a little loose and long, but that is good since she will probably only wear it twice more this summer.

This is Simplicity 4658 with a lined bodice instead of using the facing. I also added three inches to the length. She LOVES it and can't wait to wear it a couple of times before the fall hits. It is very loose fitting so she will have at least one thing to wear this spring!

Our First Eggs

Our baby chicks aren't ready to lay eggs yet, but a friend dropped off 6 full grown laying hens so we now have eggs -- 3 the first day and three yesterday -- so here is a photo of our first three eggs! and the coop, which is a little further along now.
